Whether they are called Prayer Shawls, Comfort Shawls, Peace Shawls, Mantles, lap robes etc., the shawl maker begins with prayers and blessings for the recipient. The intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl. Upon completion, a final blessing is offered before the shawl is sent on its way. Some recipients have continued the kindness by making a shawl and passing it onto someone in need. Thus, the blessing ripples from person-to-person, with both the giver and receiver feeling the unconditional embrace of a sheltering, mothering God.
Prayer shawls and lap robes are most often requested as comfort in times of grieving, encouragement in times of illness or other stuggles, and blessing for more joyus times such as a new baby, wedding, baptism, etc. They are appropriate at any time blessings are shared.
The Community of Love Prayer Shawl Ministry meets the 4th Monday of each month at Luther House, #4 Activity Room, 122 Jenners Pond Road, West Grove, PA from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Members of Community of Love join with residents of Luther House to crochet or knit prayer shawls, lap robes, and pocket prayer shawl which are then distributed through Community of Love to anyone who requests one.
